Independently Run

WGC London remains a privately run club — personal, passionate, and committed to delivering exceptional golf and a true sense of belonging.

The Club Begins

Wanstead Park Golf Club is founded by J. Gurney-Fowler, R.B. Johnson and R. Adam-Ellis. The 9-hole course, designed by Tom Dunn and laid out by James MacPherson, opens in November with a celebratory luncheon in the repurposed stables of Wanstead House - now the Clubhouse.

Growth and Redesign

By 1913, additional land known as “the field” extends the course. Play expands to 18 holes using shared fairways, before a full redesign in 1919 establishes the foundation of the modern layout.

A Club Saved

With land under threat from developers, members raise £40,000 to purchase the estate. Wanstead Sports Ground Ltd is formed, securing the future of golf, tennis, cricket — and later bowls — on the grounds. The club is renamed Wanstead Golf Club.

“WGC London is more than a club — it’s a legacy we’re proud to carry forward. We’ve reimagined what a golf club can be, without losing sight of what’s always made this place special: the people, the setting, and the sense of belonging you feel the moment you arrive.”
